How The COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Is Impacting Rural America

“We will go on with our lives as best we can,” said Donna Quillin, co-owner of the pub. “We think St. Patricks day will be a bit slower,” echoes her husband and owner, Ralph Quillin, “but we still expect to do pretty well at Oscar Diggs [our larger Lexington Restaurant].”
That laughter was silenced by Monday as Kentucky Governor, Andy Beshear, ordered all bars and restaurants to close to in-patron service by 5pm that day for the foreseeable future, following similar mandates past in neighbouring Ohio and Indiana. The mandate was passed down on the same day that Kentucky had its first Coronavirus-related death, a 66-year old man from Bourbon County. Now the Quillins, as well as a number of other restaurant owners in rural America are wondering how they will weather the weeks ahead both personally and financially.
“I’m not be the governor who acted two weeks too late,” said Beshear.
